In her dreams she was always shorn and strip-faced. The kind of girl that opens doors and pulls out chairs; that wants a wife. But life doesn't spin like so many thumb-smoothed coppers, it lists and veers and buckles; as prone to balance as a duck's egg. So give your heart its single unclocked minute before you lash yourself to daybreak. She'd burn her trophies and her pearls to be uncut.

I'd hoped to find some solace in these lines-- respite from living in the space between the synapses, the margins of our minds where kamikaze chemicals careen into the vacuum. Can I dip beneath and try to capture London's gritty gray; a fox's russet swish and flashing teeth when caught in taxi headlights--or the way that midnight glows dull orange and that planes are all there are to wish on? What a waste of time: I'm cubicle bound already, chained to the inevitable. You can hound down truth, but you'll still spend your empty days losing your grip on what you almost found.

I'm sick of killing time. This long death burns away the years without a scar or tan to show for endless days and creaking turns around the sun. The slow decay of man, our world of shadows lit by drifting ashes. I'll find a way out: flames are just dancing lies; just petty things. I'll fill this cave with flashes of lightning, lay my hands on flesh, and prise each person from their cage of skin; use my knife to free them from their unexamined life.

Should I waste the delicate flesh of cattle on my heathen tongue: that most lewd of organs, most exalted limb? I would never sully life with that crude kiss. Rather I shall siphon the scent from your neck, mark out quadrants, diamonds of skin, to lick whilst you are dozing; murmuring through your dreams. So, stir and I'll damp your lids with love-in-idleness; touch lips lightly to your vellum cheek and inhale the incense of your breath; confess my distress then disappear before you wake.

1 Doctor says I've got to stop, got to stop popping pills, got to let the nightmares come. 2 Daylight hunches behind the chimney-stacks, I bowl for rats and serenade the chimes of dustbin men. 3 Got a twenty in my bra; Nightbus swings off steaming. Got a twenty in my bra, might have got it thieving. 4 I sing for gutter starlings, thread their wishes to the wind. Oil-caught and fragile, they hide their praise under flaking planes.

My Family

My family's an orchard of savants and queers, of spendthrifts with a manic bent; of one-armed pianists and poker players and bible-bashing hermits, heaven-sent. So what chance do I have: the latest fruit to fall and lie concussed beneath the rot of ancestors? Now it's too late for prayers or pruning shears, just time for one last shot: I need to raze them down to earth; to cut away the greying wood till shoots burst bright and hopeful through the dirt. I'll burn back layers of knotted roots, hack branches, so that light filters through the canopy, and showers swell fragile buds into rows of shot-silk flowers.

I'm not really sure what the point of this thing is. I'll probably try and keep this as just a poetry storage place, although I am finding browsing worryingly addictive. Thanks to everyone who has favourited and/or commented on My Family, I wasn't here but apparently it was featured or something, which I am assuming is a good thing, so it's great to get a little recognition, especially as I just joined. Thanks especially to PoeticWar who nominated me (or whatever happens). I'm a bit under-mused at the moment, but I am trying to work on some old drafts and I have the odd gestating idea so hopefully there will be some new stuff coming soon. A

Hey Eloise, I see you got devious too. When I was a student I had the same interests as you, well except for the poetry part, I guess some of us grow up way faster than others ; -) My favourite film was and probably still is, The Life of Brian but I loved the RHPS too.
